Description
Summary:An Inuit man raises both his arms as he demonstrates a hunting signal at Repulse Bay, Hudson Bay, Canada, January 12, 1902. He holds a rifle in his left hand. Infrastructure Lifestyle Title supplied by cataloger. Identified by George Comer as "Photo #34, #82, a native (Sam) showing how the natives signal to each other when deer are in sight, Repulse Bay, Jan. 12, 1902." Rifles were obtained by the Inuit in trade from the American whalers. Taken by Captain George Comer (1858-1937), a sealer and whaling captain from East Haddam. He went to sea while still in his teens and was later master of vessels from both New London and New Bedford. Comer participated in voyages involved in polar expeditions and was noted for his studies of Arctic peoples and their environment.
