Description
Summary:A large group of Inuit pose on the ice at Repulse Bay, Hudson Bay, Canadian Arctic, January 7, 1902. Lifestyle Livelihood Title supplied by cataloger. Identical negative 1963.1767.54 is identified on original negative envelope as Photo #15, # A81. Taken by Captain George Comer (1858-1937), a sealer and whaling captain from East Haddam. He went to sea while still in his teens and was later master of vessels from both New London and New Bedford. Comer participated in voyages involved in polar expeditions and was noted for his studies of Arctic peoples and their environment. Comer identified this image as follows, "The Eskimos have stopped their games to have their picture taken, January 7, 1902, Repulse Bay, temp. 6 degrees."
