Captain George Comer of East Haddam was master of the A.T. Gifford on two Arctic whaling voyages, 1907-1912. While on the A.T. Gifford, he mapped areas in the Hudson Bay region. The screw steam tow boat Wm. E. Cleary was built in Philadelphia, 1964. The screw steam tow boat Asher J. Hudson was built in Camden, New Jersey, 1889.
