Probably Captain Horace M. Newbury of Groton, whaling master. His ship, the Paiea, was one of thirty vessels destroyed by Bering Strait ice in a famous whaling disaster, 1871. In later years he was known in Groton as an amateur doctor. Paiea was owned by Williams & Haven of New London. Good condition, some foxing.
