Summary:Full-length view of a man identified as Horace Newbury dressed in clothing identified as his Eskimo garments. He stands, holding the barrel of a shotgun in his right hand, the stock of the gun resting on the floor. He has a beard and is facing the camera. Lifestyle Livelihood Title supplied by cataloger. Probably Captain Horace M. Newbury of Groton, whaling master. His ship, the Paiea, was one of thirty vessels destroyed by Bering Strait ice in a famous whaling disaster, 1871. In later years he was known in Groton as an amateur doctor. Paiea was owned by Williams & Haven of New London. Good condition, some foxing.
