We here pay grateful and everlasting tribute, to all foreign nationals across the Empire, who courageously and passionately fought side by side with their British counterparts, for King and country, during the First World War'; left: 'India Australia South Africa In 1914 the British Government knew its forces were too small to take on the might of the Central Powers. The British Empire was called to arms and volunteers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Newfoundland, and the Union of South Africa flocked to the aid of the mother country, joined by soldiers from other African colonies, including the Indian Army with the Gurkhas from Nepal'; images of colonial soldiers; 'To the Glory of God and the memory of one million dead of the British Empire who fell in the Great War and of whom the greater part rest in France'; right: 'Canada New Zealand New Foundland The sacrifices made by the Empire on the battlefields of Europe echo across the intervening years as part of a proud Commonwealth shared history.
