Summary: | This thesis has its origins in the observation that trains, sometimes, are off schedule. Studies into the causes for this and how punctuality might be enhanced are presented here. In such a large system as the railway, a vast array of problems an queries from different disciplines are waiting to be posed and solved in order to improve punctuality. The supervisor for this work has been Professor Erik Höglund, together with co-supervisor Uday Kumar. This work has been made possible through financial support from Banverket, the Swedish railway infrastructure manager, which is gratefully acknowledged. I would like to thank the following for making this thesis possible: licentiate Mattias Holmgren for involving me in PhD studies, licentiate Ulla Espling for sharing her world of railway knowledge, (both LTU). Also, doctor P-O Larsson-Kråik, Lars Sundholm and Torgny Johansson of Banverket for profound knowledge and support. And of course I also want to express my gratitude to all my family and friends for being there. Luleå, spring of 2005 |
