Summary:edented collaboration between the U.S. Navy and the marine research community, was designed to use nuclear-powered submarines to map and sam-ple the ice canopy; the physical, chemical, and biological water properties; the seafloor topogra-phy; and the shallow subsurface of the Arctic Ocean. Data acquired during eight submarine cruises vastly improved our understanding of the Arctic Ocean and demonstrated the inextricable linkages between organisms, atmosphere, ice, water, and rock. This paper summarizes SCICEX results to demonstrate the important contribution of this program to Arctic science.
