Description
Summary:This glossary defines some specific terms as the Lead Authors intend them to be interpreted in the context of this report. Red, italicized words indicate that the term is defined in the Glossary. Abrupt climate change A large-scale change in the climate system that takes place over a few decades or less, persists (or is anticipated to persist) for at least a few decades and causes substantial disruptions in human and natural systems. Active layer The layer of ground that is subject to annual thawing and freezing in areas underlain by permafrost. Adjustment time See Lifetime. See also Response time. Advection Transport of water or air along with its properties (e.g., tem-perature, chemical tracers) by winds or currents. Regarding the general distinction between advection and convection, the former describes trans-port by large-scale motions of the atmosphere or ocean, while convection describes the predominantly vertical, locally induced motions.
