Effects can be seen across the Earth, and none are more visible than the changes that are taking place in our oceans. Over the last decade, ecosystems from the Arctic to the tropi-cal Pacific have seen drastic changes such as melting sea ice and coral bleaching due to the rising ocean tem-peratures. In 1998 coral reefs around the world experienced the most severe bleach-ing in recorded history (ISRS 1998; Wilkinson et al. 1999).
