Summary: | from the 2005/06 Newsletters A lthough it is seen as apotential threat to publichealth, avian flu may be even more threatening to employees of poultry farms especially those involved in the initial culling of the birds, other farm workers and animal handlers. According to OSHA’s “Guidance for Protecting Workers Against Avian Flu, ” these same people may (ironi-cally) be the first line of defense for both the protection of human health and the reduction of large loses in the agricultural industry because they are most likely to recognize an infected bird or animal. Employees of wild game pre-serves are also at risk. On the med-ical front, laboratory workers, medical transport workers, and doc-tors and nurses are also at risk. |
