Description
Summary:solicited written public comments on a draft NPDES permit developed pursuant to an application submitted by Acadia Aquaculture Inc. for the discharge of waste products from a concentrated animal feeding operation (growing of Atlantic Salmon) into the waters of Blue Hill Bay off of Dunham’s Cove in Blue Hill, Maine. EPA also held a public hearing on November 14, 2000 at the Town Office Auditorium in Blue Hill, Maine in order to solicit additional oral and written comment on the draft permit. During the comment period, EPA received 42 letters of comment. At the public hearing, 22 speakers provided oral comments and 13 written documents were submitted to EPA. Since the close of the public comment period, EPA has conducted dialogues with the DEP and the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) regarding the certain aspects of the permit which pertain to programs of these agencies. EPA has also been in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service concerning the terms of terms of this permit in regard to the Endangered Species Act listing of a Distinct Population Segment of Anadromous Atlantic Salmon within the Gulf of Maine. That consultation is now complete.
