Summary:We investigate the classification information contained in the different polarisation channels from a fully polari-metric scene of an arctic glacier. Specifically, we com-pare classifications from the full quadruple polarisation data; dual polarisation modes; and each single polari-sation channel. The classifications are performed with both the standard Wishart classifier and a non-Gaussian based K-Wishart classifier. Post classification class his-tograms clearly show that the K-Wishart model is a better statistical fit to the glacier ice classes, and the classifica-tion images show noticeable differences. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the different polarisation channels hold differing class distinguishing information and use a (visual) goodness-of-fit to the class histograms as an in-dicator for an appropriate number of significant classes in each polarisation combination. As expected, the single polarisation channels hold the least information and the complete quadruple polarisation data holds the most.
