Description
Summary:Sex and age specific indices of relative abundance (beginning in 1988) for North Atlantic swordfish caught by the Canadian pelagic longline fishery are updated with data from 2002 to 2005. Standardized catch rates for ages ranging from 2 to 9+ were estimated using a multiplicative model which incorporates variables to account for year, area, month, and targeting of tunas. The variability in observed CPUE explained by the model ranged from 39-49 % for males and 33-49 % for females. The trend in CPUE indicates that relative abundance has continued to increase since the historical low in 1996. It is recommended that the ICCAT SCRS explore methods to incorporate the influence of environmental conditions and continue to address the problem of year effects in CPUE series.
