In May 2001, China became a member of the Bangkok Agreement, the first free trade area analogue the country joined. China has moved fast since then. It has (partially) completed free trade agreement (FTA) talks with the 10-member South East Asia Nations (ASEAN), Chile, Pakistan, and New Zealand and has signed a Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with Hong Kong and Macau.
