Description
Summary:study area contains several naledi of different types which are documented by air photographs taken during the last 50 years. Additional studies based upon field observations and air-photo interpretation have been undertaken in other parts of Spitsbergen. Sixty-three different naled sites are described, terminology is discussed, and a classification of different types of naledi is pro-posed. The forms of the naledi related to their genesis, their hydrological characteristics, and their position in the terrain are described. Details of surface morphology, hydrology, salt precipitation, and the naled as a geomorphological agent are discussed. A study was made to find out if naledi might be used as indicators of short-term climatic variation. Good correlations were found be-tween the length of the freezing period and the ice volume at the end of the winter. It was also found that variations in the summer air temperature can be correlated with either variations in ice volume loss or the remaining surface area of naledi with acceptable accuracy and, that under cer-tain conditions, naledi may be used as indirect indicators of short-term climatic variations.
