Description
Summary:KNIGHT. J. 1999. Problems of Irish drurnlins and Late Devensian icc sheet reconstructiclns. Pro<'eetlins.s ol the Geolo,qls/.r'As.rr.rtrutitnt.l l0.9-16. Reconstructions of thc Late Dcvensian ice shcet in lreland are strongly b iased towards explain in-q data obtained by the Geological Survey of l re land dur in-c thc last century. and observations undertaken by key workers in this century (i.e. J. K. Charlesworth). Modern field observation and analytical tcchniques, however, show that many of these data, such as the distribution of drumlins. are erroneous. Furthcrmore, models derived fiom these data, dealing with the significancc and distribr-rtion of ditf-erent bedfbrm typcs, thc location of ice centres and the direction of ice flow lines, can no longcr be supported. New observations based on rnapping fiorn satell ite imagery. and validated by detailed regional-scalc ficld studies. show the cornplexity of subglacial bedfbrrr patterns which record several phases of subglacial activity during the Late Devensian. The presencc of ice flow-transversc Rogen moraines and patterns of overprintcd bcdforrns in north ccntral Ireland suggcst that subglacia l environments and the locat ion o1- ice centres changed dramat ical ly dur ing the overal l.u lacia l cycle.
