Summary: | Gender co-operation is of benefit because: • it normalises the environment by breaking down prejudices and stereotypes and extremes in behaviour with a resulting decrease in stress; • it provides a better framework for decision making within the workplace because it reflects the diversity of the population; • it increases operational efficiency; • it fosters good working relationships through a critical gender mix; • it allows selection from 100 % of the working population. These are not ambit claims. They can be supported by research and anecdotal information from around the world and in a variety of work places. These include the Antarctic, mining industry, aviation, air traffic control, policing, academia and all areas of the military, and I am sure this list is not conclusive. Increasingly newspapers are carrying stories about improved work-based culture and high productivity in businesses through heartfelt EEO programs, especially in relation to family friendly policies: ESSO, AMP, ALCOA and Australia Post, to name a few. |
