Summary: | Generally speaking, crustal deformation has three components, one vertical and two horizontal. This must hold true also for the Fennoscandian Shield. One of them, the vertical component, has been under intensive study for many centuries in Fennoscandia and is, therefore, relatively well-known. On the contrary, only little is known of horizontal components, until now. Very recently, horizontal components of the deformation of the Fennoscandian crust have been taken under investigation, and the first results of analyses of geotechnical rock measurement, seismic, and geodetic data indicate that the maximum horizontal compression prevails in Scandinavia in the NW-SE direction. |
