Description
Summary:Research Priority: Marine measurement technology development Summary of Proposed Work: We propose to develop biochemical sampling capability on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, the so-called Webb Slocum Glider, and field test the AUV off Seward in the Bering Sea. The proposed technology development will enable scientist to collect critical oceanographic ecosystem data without the need of ships and manned laboratories and to receive this data in real time from the field via satellite communication. Gliders are reusable long-range autonomous underwater vehicles designed to glide from the ocean surface to as deep as 1000m and back while collecting profiles of oceanographic data. Gliders use GPS to locate the vehicle and transmit data back to shore via satellite communication, while allowing operators to send back changes to the glider mission. We will acquire one glider through internal UAF funds, and propose to integrate two different optical sensors to be able to sample high-resolution temperature, salinity and pressure data phytoplankton fluorescence, CDOM fluorescence, optical backscatter, and nitrate concentration. These variables are critical to measure for understanding the coupled
