Summary:MAIONO (Middle atmospheric ionization) has the following objectives: Validation of modeled ionization and recombination rates for precipitat-ing energetic particles using electron densities measured by EISCAT. Consideration of the entire particle inventory (electrons, protons,.). Climatology of precipitating particles and related effects, such as tem-peratures and noctilucent clouds. The Effect Precipitating energetic particles lead to atmospheric ionization (primary ef-fect). Secondary effects include: ozone depletion [2, 4], cf. Fig. 1; changes in temperature associated with ozone depletion [8], long-term changes in atmospheric composition associated with the down-ward transport of NOx produced by precipitating particles [3], creation of condensation nuclei (clouds [10], nocti-lucent clouds). ⇒ validation of modeled ionization rates important!
