Description
Summary:This Ph.D. dissertation is just the final step of a project that has been carried out over many years. It is thus quite difficult to thank all the people who affected me and my work during this period of time. The following is the best approximation I can give. My first personal thoughts naturally go to my family. They supported me in every possible way and always trusted any decisions I made. I would like to thank Robi and Stefi for all the moments we enjoyed together. They helped me find some serenity when things were getting hard. I cannot refrain from remembering the great time we had in Churchill, watching polar bears roaming along the shore of the Hudson Bay, or that Friday night staring at the northern lights. From a professional point of view, I am grateful to Andrea Asperti for his com-ments, suggestions and criticisms, which greatly affected my work. He seemed to be always optimistic even when I could not see which direction to proceed. The other members of the HELM team were of great help, of course, and contributed effectively in creating an interesting research environment. I want to thank here
