Description
Summary:One objective of the annual January ITER cruise is to characterize both t physical d biological nature of the fo aging areas of Adelie penguins nesting near Palmer Station in order to examine the interaction between local prey availabil ity and reproductive success. In January 1995, a "picket line" sampling strategy identified both the direction of travel and the distance of foraging trips of AdSlie penguins leaving the Palmer area rookeries (Smith et al., Antarctic Journal, in this issue). Once the foraging areas had been located, a high-den sity sampling grid was run within these areas to charac terize the physics, optics, chemistry, and biology within the foraging area.
