Description
Summary:The assimilation of MIPAS ozone and water vapour data into the Met Office’s Unified Model is discussed. The MIPAS dataset (which also includes temperature) is assimilated together with standard operational datasets. Evaluation of the ozone analyses, using selfconsistency tests and comparisons against independent data, indicates that they provide a realistic representation of the stratospheric ozone distribution. Evaluation of the ozone analyses also indicates various elements of the assimilation algorithm that could be improved. We provide an evolving 3-d view of the unprecedented Antarctic ozone hole split of September 2002. Finally, we also discuss the assimilation of water vapour in the troposphere and stratosphere. 1.
