Description
Summary:Thank you for the opportunity to submit these scoping comments on the National Marine Fisheries Service's Notice ofIntent with respect to offshore oil and gas activities in the Arctic Ocean. We appreciate the opportunity to provide NMFS with critical feedback from the potentially impacted local communities of America's Arctic. These comments are submitted on behalf of the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission (AEWC.) As you know, AEWC is a non-profit organization representing the unique interests of Inupiat subsistence whaling captains in Northern coastal Alaska. AEWC represents the eleven bowhead whale subsistence hunting villages of Barrow, Nuiqsut, Kaktovik, Pt. Hope, Kivalina, Wales, Savoonga, Gambell, Little Diomede, Wainright and Pt. Lay. AEWC represents the unique interests ofInupiat whaling captains and their communities, who depend on the resources of the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) to continue the subsistence practices that have provided for our families and sustained our communities since time immemorial. As requested in the scoping notice, we would like to receive a copy of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) as soon as it becomes available. OUf address is as follows: April 9,2010
