Summary:計畫編號:MOST105-2611-M006-003 執行機構:國立成功大學地球科學系(所) 研究期間:2016-08~2017-07 海洋酸化現象將對海洋生態系統造成重大衝擊,然而現階段科學對酸化機制及影響程度仍未有良好瞭解,本計畫擬利用2 年時間對碳酸鹽記錄器及硼同位素海水 pH 代用指標的強韌性進行系統性評估,此計畫將與UCSC (Professor Paytan)及中國科技大學劉羿教授等保持緊密合作關係,利用其長期在墨西哥灣等地監測站(Paytan)及綠島、蘭嶼(You)和南海周遭珊瑚礁珊瑚(Liu)樣品,針對不同pH 值海域進行持續海水及生物樣品監測採樣研究,利用成功大學Neptune MC-ICPMS 進行高精確11B分析,其結果將對珊瑚古氣候記錄器獲得重要基本知識及了解。第一年期間我們已初步完成南海113珊瑚標本,分析橫跨將近500年(1466-1960);另外安排Kyle Broach (PhD student of Professor Paytan at UCSC)參加台、美加EAPSI計畫攜帶墨西哥灣有孔虫標本至實驗室進行高精確11B分析以測試古代地下水輸出量變化。 Ocean acidification may impact strongly of ecology systems in marine environments. However, there are still un-resolved issues regarding the basic mechanisms for carbonate archives and its potential biological impacts. This two-year proposal will focus to delineate the faithfulness of 11B pH proxy in marine carbonates, as well as to evaluate potential uncertainties involved in this application. We will work closely with Professors Paytan at USCS, USA and Liu at USTC, China to make the best utilization of available specimens from their long-term monitoring program at México and South China Sea, as well as our own corals collected from Orchard and Green Island. The seawater with various pH in Yucatán Peninsula will be used to calibrate against coral skeleton or foraminiferal tests and to check boron isotopic fractionation factor under different ambient conditions using high precision Neptune MC-ICPMS 11B measurements at NCKU. These results will be critical for applying 11B pH proxy in marine carbonates. During the first year, we have initiated high precision 11B analyses of 113 coral specimens obtained from SCS (Professor Yi Liu at USTC). On the other hand, a UCSC PhD student, Kyle Broach, working with Professor A Paytan is coming to NCKU for theirs foraminiferal shell 11B analyses, separated from sediments in Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, is coming to NCKU in the summer (joint EAPSI project between MOST and NSF) to study groundwater discharge flux in the past.
