Description
Summary:This data report summarizes results of the Atlantic Inflow Experiment, a part of the GIN Sea '87 project. The Atlantic Inflow Experiment was designed to investigate the causes and effects of the inflow of North Atlantic Water into the Greenland-Norwegian-Iceland Sea. In June 1987 an array of eight moorings (30 current meters) and a sequence of six submerged floats and two meteorological (ASID) buoys were deployed. Six of the moorings provided a grid of float listening stations for the first -- 500 km of the Norwegian Atlantic Current. The other two moorings were located to provide a downstream and an inflow condition (with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler). One mooring was lost but all the current meters performed well. The float data return was good but with some intermittency. The ASID buoy data time series was marred by malfunctions in the thermistor chains. The data are presented in the form of instrument statistics, histograms, velocity scatter diagrams, time-series plots, progressive vector diagrams, velocity stick diagrams, and velocity spectra.
