Summary: | Interface between the continental and marine systems, the large North-Atlantic estuaries have been the subject of many installations to the detriment of their richness and their natural functions. Among those, the estuary of the Gironde is characterized by its level of turbidity, its relative biological richness and a functioning still rather near to its natural state. This quality in particular related to the size of the estuary, which was only partially modelled by the urban and harbour activities, remains fragile. Interdisciplinary research in progress highlights the impoverishment of this ecosystem and the importance of the contaminations and deteriorations undergone by biological organisms. |
