Description
Summary:The reliability of a simple survey of the bacterial environment was investigated on seven batches of larvae, which were reared up to day 10 with the same standard procedure. The high variability of quality was shown by significant differences observed between growth and survival rates, or bacterial counts. Correlations were drawn up with a new type of challenge test. This test was performed at day 9 in 500-ml bottles, where 50 larvae were kept in seawater for 48 h, while they were infected with a pathogenic vibrio. This easy test could be used in routine for assessing the effect of various environmental and nutritional factors on the resistance of larvae against bacterial infection.
