The presence of the photographs suggests that these children’s books are « documentaries », and so they are here compared to the photo-illustrated accounts published by the other members of Peary’s expeditions to Greenland. Their historic Arctic expeditions were not without scandal and controversy, both political and familial. Josephine Peary rewrites history, and does so through the crossing of four genres: autobiography, children’s books, the family album and the photographically illustrated travelogue. Cette étude a pour sujet le récit de soi illustré par la photographie, et plus particulièrement le livre pour enfants autobiographique comme récit colonialiste. Les deux ouvrages examinés sont de l’américaine Josephine Peary (1863-1955) : The Snow-Baby (1901) et Children of the Arctic (1903). Les photos suggèrent que l’histoire pour enfants est un « documentaire » au même titre que les volumes photo-illustrés publiés par les autres membres des expéditions des Peary. Les deux livres sont comparés ici aux œuvres écrites par les témoins de leurs séjours au Groenland. Ces expéditions historiques furent accompagnées de scandales et de controverses, tant familiaux que politiques. Josephine Peary récrit l’histoire. Elle le fait en croisant quatre genres : l’autobiographie, le livre pour enfants, l’album de photos de famille, et celui du récit de voyage.
