Description
Summary:International audience An archeological survey was lead in Rec d 'Aigues Rouges cave at Saint-Pons-de-Thomières (Hérault) bringing evidence of a recent Neolithic/Chalcolithic collective burial. The up to date methods of "field anthropology" permitted to observe accurately the sepulchral level composed of several individuals and a gathering of the skulls was clearly evident. An architecture closely related to the utilisation of this cavity was displayed. These arrangements concern the transformation of the cave to allow a better body circulation, an elaboration of structures for the access and reception of dead people, and the closing of the burial. These observations contribute to a better knowledge of the prehistoric mortuary practices in the Languedoc region.
