International audience Following the work of [BD99], the present paper presents a general approach to adaptive mesh refinement for ocean models. The numerical procedure is briefly described, as well as a software package which easily allows for the actual implementation of multiresolution within any existing finite difference model. The effectiveness of this approach for ocean modelling, even at a basin-scale, is illustrated in the context of a primitive equation numerical model of the north Atlantic. Several experiments are presented, which demonstrate the potentialities of mesh refinement and emphasize the role of the refinement criterion.
