Description
Summary:Russia currently has the largest and most capable military force in the Arctic. The Arctic is critical to Russia because of its natural resources and access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Arctic is of strategic importance to the United States because of its proximity to the homeland and Russia's increased military presence. The United States' main objectives in the region are to defend the homeland and ensure waters remain free and open for navigation. While this is currently achievable, it may not be in the future. As Russia continues to advance its military and economic presence, the United States will have to respond if it wants to compete in an era of great power competition.
