The air-conditioning was blowing arctic gales into the seminar room, forcing professors to cover with their shawls and moleskin jackets, in what was a blistering March for Brisbane in 2008. I was midway through the discussion component for the first defence of my PhD when this question lost its spoken inertia and came to settle between my ears. It was, as it later turned out, a question that would never leave me.
