Summary:In 1817 - 78 the Howgate Polar expedition wintered in Cumberland Sound, Baffin Island, at the little harbour of Annanactook. The position of the camp is now uncertain, but it was probably at the head of the Sound, on the east shore, within thirty or forty miles of Pangnirtung. Included in the personnel of the expedition were two scientists, Sherman and Kumlien, who were responsible for the meteorological and biological observations. Kumlien was the first professional biologist to examine the shores of Baffin Island (Kumlien, 1879).
