| Summary: | Les opérations militaires ont constitué un important vecteur de transformation de l’OTAN. Elles ont également suscité de nombreux débats tant politiques que stratégiques au sein de l’Alliance atlantique. Leur dynamique a débuté au milieu des années 1990, avec la première opération menée en ex-Yougoslavie, et a symboliquement pris fin avec le retrait hâtif d’Afghanistan en août 2021. Celui-ci pose une série de nouvelles questions : quel rôle opérationnel va désormais remplir l’Alliance atlantique ? La fin des opérations militaires multilatérales est-elle propre à l’OTAN ou plus générale? Military operations have been a key driver in NATO’s transformation, and have also given rise to a great deal of political and strategic debate within the North Atlantic Alliance. They began picking up momentum in the mid-1990s, with the first operation in the former Yugoslavia, and ended symbolically with the hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. This raises a series of fresh questions: what operational role will NATO play now? Is the end of multilateral military operations specific to NATO, or is it more widespread?
