Summary:FAST FACTS About one of four persons enrolled in higher education in the US in 1995 was classified as belonging to a minority. The largest fraction were African Americans (about 42% of total minority enrollment), followed by Hispanics, who represented about 31% of minority enrollment. From: Education Statistics of the United States (1999), p. 2. (REF L11 E38 1999) Mother's Day did not start off as a gift-giving holiday. Instead, it began with Anna Jarvis, a West Virginia schoolteacher, who wanted to honor her mother on the anniversary of her death, held on May 10, 1908. More than 400 children attended and each mother received a red carnation. Four years later, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. From: Encyclopedia of North American Traditions, Customs and Rituals, p. 171. (Ref GT2853 U5 G39 1996) Alcohol consumption has long been an important aspect of social life in most areas of the UK. The British public house (pub) remains a key focus for recreation and leisure activity, and drinking, whether at home, in bars, or in restaurants, is normal behavior for most people. Alcohol is not only considered as a beverage, but also widely regarded as a token of celebration and of conviviality. From: International Handbook on Alcohol and Culture, p. 295. (Ref HV5035 I57 1995) Before and during World War II, the Japan military system catered to the sexual needs of its soldiers through the use of 'jugun iantu' (military comfort women). It is estimated that between 70,000 and 200,000 women were forced into sexual labor during the war. Testimonies of former comfort women reveal they were forced into a social condition of female sexual slavery. From: The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery, p. 579.
