Summary:READ "R" REVIEWS JOURNAL REVIEW OF: "Communication, Culture and Critique" This newly emerged journal from Wiley and Blackwell publishers complements the Bellevue University communication journal collection. It is included in a subscription of four other communication journals and is a wonderful addition to help aid our communication educational department. At Bellevue University, our communication needs are constantly changing and evolving. This journal will keep us abreast of new media and journalism ideas. In addition, it will keep us informed of new evaluation and critiquing methods and in the field of communication and cultures. More specifically, this quarterly journal "provides an international forum for critical, interpretive, and qualitative research examining the role of communication and cultural criticism in today's world." It is authored by the International Communication Association. The March 2008 inaugural issue contains several scholarly researched articles, commentaries, reviews, and notes. More specifically, you will find in this issue such topics on the 'necessity of being critical', 'social movement theories', 'media and literacy', 'Asian and Western Science', and the 'militarization of U.S. communication.' A print version of Communication, Culture and Critique is found in the periodical section of Bellevue University Library and online at http://www.blackwell-synergy.com VIDEO REVIEW OF: "Ben & Jerry's" (DVD HD9281.U53 B463 2005) In 1977, two friends, named Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, took a risk and decided to go into the ice cream business. What started off as a small shop in Vermont has now flourished into 450 ice cream shops throughout the country. How did Ben & Jerry's become such a success? Ben and Jerry enrolled in a $5 correspondence course to learn the technique of homemade ice cream. They learned how to run a business by reading pamphlets and by working seven days a week. Ben & Jerry's homemade ice cream is a socially responsible business whose products are design with social benefits and whole mission statement is to integrate social concerns into their products. In 1987, they were recognized by President Reagan with the "Small Business Person of the Year Award." This 50-minute DVD presented by the Biography Channel, shows Ben and Jerry's unique and creative approach to business that has made their company and the community profitable and socially responsible. Ben & Jerry's partnered with non-profit organizations such as Goodwill Industries, to be able to "provide at risk teens with job training skills." Their distinct way of doing business has made their ice cream a success and a story worth learning about. BOOK REVIEW OF: "Global Warning: The Last Chance for Change" (QC981.8.G56 B763 2007) Do you know what Mt. Kilimanjaro means? In Swahili, Kilima Njaro means "shining mountain." Shining mountain refers to the melting ice cap that was once a permanent fixture on Mt. Kilimanjaro. In "Global Warning: The Last Chance for Change," Brown discusses global warming and the worldwide catastrophes related to this phenomenon. There are incredible satellite pictures of drought, forest fires and hurricanes. This book reports on the causes and effects of global warming, for example, the destructive powers of natural disasters are increasing due to more water vapor produced by heat. With chapters like "Creating a Scorched Earth," "Shellfish on Death Row" and "Fiddling While the Globe Burns," Brown presents easy to understand scientific facts with overwhelming pictures and incredible quotes. Did you know the sea is alkaline because plants take carbon dioxide out of the water and this balance provides minerals needed for shellfish, like plankton, to prosper? The problem is the sea is becoming more acidic. More acidity means less plankton, threatening survival of our beloved whales. There are also reports of worldwide efforts to salvage our Earth, for example, carbon trading, tidal turbines, carbon storage and solar technology to name a few. We recommend you pull this book off the shelf and flip to page 134 to see what used to be Mount Kilimanjaro and what it is now. While you are at it, flip to page 144 to see the glaciers of Norway. Those pictures will make you concerned if you are not already. This book can be found in the general circulating collection and can be checked out for three weeks. DID YOU KNOW. The library has new scanners? The library recently installed three flatbed scanners to replace the old upright ones which will hopefully be more user-friendly. They are located next to computer #6, 12, & 18. You can search all of the library databases at one time? The library has added a federated search system, called SimpleSearch.
