Summary:The slower growth and lower relative fecundity of Antarctic fish as compared to their temperate relatives might be related to specific energy requirements for metabolic processes in the cold and low or seasonally restricted food availability.Comparing field and experimental data, analysis of lipids and the energy budgets of the Antarctic eelpout Pachycara brachycephalum with those of the temperate species Zoarces viviparus ,energy uptake and energy allocation at different temperatures are discussed in the light of the biogeography and ecological preferences of the species.
