| Summary: | The Arctic is experiencing pressure from numerous sources. Local pollution, long-range contaminant transport, habitat fragmentation, melting of sea-ice and permafrost due to climate change, overharvesting, invasive species and the effects of regional and economic development and subsequent transport are among the many factors affecting Arctic biodiversity. While the effects of changes to Arctic biodiversity are of common concern, status and trend data are inconsistent and available on a sporadic basis or not at all. National and regional information is often lacking, not well shared and gathered using different methodologies and protocols. Although there are numerous biodiversity monitoring programs in place in the circumpolar Arctic there is little coordination of efforts among them. As a consequence, our understanding of the larger picture of ecosystem integrity in the Arctic and the status and trends of Arctic species and their habitats is incomplete. |
