Summary:Sea-water from the subantarctic region appears to be strongly bactericidal. When diluted: 1:10,000 it kills E. coli within a few days. Cultures prepared with this water contain numerous microvibrios apparently as a pure strain. Microvibrio- free filtrates of the culture are still able to kill E. coli . Moreover the bactericidal power increases after each addition of host-bacteria in spite of the lack of the predators. L'eau delà région subantarctique (48°33'S - 70°50'E) est fortement bactéricide. Diluée à 1:10 000 elle tue les bacilles de Escherichia coli en quelques jours. Les cultures obtenues à partir de cette eau contiennent de nombreux microvibrions en état apparemment pur. Le filtrat d'une telle culture, exempt de microvibrions, continue à tuer E. coli. Son pouvoir bactéricide s'accroît après chaque addition de bacilles-hôtes, sans que le prédateur soit présent dans le filtrat.
