| Summary: | Yukon College traces its roots to the Whitehorse Vocational Training School (WVTS), established in 1963 by the Yukon Territorial Government as the first post secondary institution in the territory, offering a variety of vocational and trades training courses at a new facility located on the banks of the Yukon River in Riverdale. In 1964 Basic Training in Skill Development courses were initiated. Many First Nations students attended WVTS attaining skills in many fields that enhanced their ability to participate in the booming Yukon economy of that time. The institution was enlarged in 1965, and a change in name to Yukon Vocational and Technical Training Centre (YVTTC) reflected a growing demand for post secondary skills throughout the territory. A large proportion of the students at YVTTC were First Nations adults completing academic and technical trades training. |
