Instruments used: Commercial pots have a diameter of 1.2-1.4 m, a height of 50 cm, and are covered with a 90 mm mesh. Research pots, designed specifically for surveys, have a diameter of 1.4 m, a height of 50 cm, and a smaller mesh (55 mm). Data processing and conversion steps:Data are collected by independent observers on board blue crab survey vessels. Sample size: During blue crab surveys two pot types are used: research pots with small mesh to capture all size classes of crabs and commercial pots to reflect commercial effort. For each survey 540 pot lifts for each pot type are conducted in areas that represent the fishery. Fishery-independent surveys conducted regularly during June or July since 2002. Points on a map will represent sample sites. Funded through industry cost-recovery.
