Description
Summary:The colonies and coastline were digitised and the resulting dxf files were converted to shapefiles and spatially adjusted in ArcGIS 8.3 using the coastline from Australian Antarctic Data Centre GIS datasets 57, 90, 91 and 97. Two different spatial adjustment techniques were used: Affine transformation using 4 points followed by a small shift or scaling to get the best fit with the coastline. These data have Qinfo = 610. Similarity transformation followed by a small shift or scaling to get the best fit with the coastline. These data have Qinfo = 611. The penguin colony attribute table is populated with the count given in ANARE Research Notes 71. Some islands were not fully mapped. Use coastline data to see which parts of the islands were mapped and which were not. A pdf file was created for each map showing the result of the spatial adjustment in relation to the coastline. Refer to the link below. Coastline data belonging to datasets 57, 90, 91 and 97 are depicted in black. Data belonging to dataset 218 are depicted in grey. The penguin polygons are grey. Map 20 sheet 1 has a polygon on the edge of the mapping extent, the count is recorded as 71 but it may be more. Map 23 has a photo join, there is some uncertainty as to the accuracy of the count but it is more than 200. The shapefiles have been formatted according to the SCAR Feature Catalogue which includes data quality information (refer to link below). The dates provided in temporal coverage are approximate only. The years are correct. Must be cited properly. Usually mapped to a Universal Transverse Mercator projection, Zone 41. This dataset includes Adelie penguin colonies and coastline digitised from Eric J. Woehler, G.W. Johnstone and Harry R. Burton, 'ANARE Research Notes 71, The distribution and abundance of Adelie penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, in the Mawson area and at the Rookery Islands (Specially Protected Area 2), 1981 and 1988'.
