Description
Summary:Complete for approximately 570 km of ground survey track. Optical levelling measurements were taken at 300-400 m intervals from sea level at Landing Bluff (69.74 S, 73.71 E) adjacent to Sandefjord Bay, across and along the shelf to J205 on Jetty Peninsula (70.81 S, 68.54 E). Tellurometer closures were obtained for several endpoints of the traverse route to Blustery Cliffs (71.42 S, 67.88 E) on Fisher Massif to the west of the shelf, and New Year Nunatak (71.06 S, 71.49 E) in the Manning Nunataks on the eastern side of the shelf. The data have been checked for consistency with conditions for hydrostatic equilibrium based on RES thicknesses of the ice shelf and a density profile from a borehole at G1. Horizontal distances were calculated by stadia markers within the optical level, by odometer wheel placement of route marker canes every 3.2 km (2 mile), and by tellurometer (EDM) measurements with marked reference points every 5-10 km. Along track accuracy was estimated at approximately 100 m. An entry of -9999 in the spreadsheet indicates null data. Elevation and thickness measurements are presumably given in metres. Raw data were logged manually into field logbooks. Data were also stored in a spreadsheet (MS Excel) ice shelf surface elevations (reduced data). Ice shelf surface elevation data from an oversnow ground-based traverse along the centre of the Amery Ice Shelf from A509 (69.06 S, 72.15 E) to T4 (71.22 S, 69.48 E), including two transverse arms; between G1 (69.49 S, 71.72 E) and A119 (69.81 S, 73.28 E); and between T3 (70.79 S, 68.89 E) and T2 (71.00 S, 70.75 E) during the 1968 spring-summer season.
