Description
Summary:Progress Code: completed Statement: For Incubation 3 (ENRICH064, CTD 15) a proportion of chlorophyll that was classified by CHEMTAX as dinoflagellates was observed to be haptophytes using light microscopy. These groups share similar pigments and can therefore be difficult to separate using CHEMTAX, particularly given a low chlorophyll concentration at this site. A ratio of dinoflagellates to haptophytes was therefore established using light microscopy and cell biovolumes (Hillebrand et al.,1999), and resulted in 23.02% of the dinoflagellate population being re-allocated to haptophytes. Purpose Water was extracted at these 6 sites to undertake experimental incubations onboard, examining the effects of light and iron on phytoplankton communities. Please see Vives, C.R., Schallenberg, C., Strutton, P.G., Westwood, K.J. (2022). Iron and light co-limitation of phytoplankton growth off East Antarctica. Journal of Marine Systems, 234, doi.org/10.1016/j.jmarsys.2022.103774 Phytoplankton community composition was determined at 6 sites from the ENRICH voyage conducted on RV Investigator (IN2019_V01). To determine composition, analysis of pigments was undertaken using high performance liquid chromatography according to the method of Wright et al. (2010), followed by chemotaxonomic analysis using CHEMTAX (Mackey et al. 1996, Wright et al. 1996). This dataset contains the pigment concentrations (µg L-1) and taxa concentrations (µg L-1 chl a) for each of the 6 sites. Standard deviations for taxa are also shown.
