Description
Summary:Progress Code: completed Statement: Soundings are collected from summer voyages and added to the dataset on a regular basis. The project is ongoing. The data are generalised to reflect a more accurate interpretation of the ocean floor. There are large areas for which there are no data. Data have been collected as depth soundings from Antarctic voyages and categorised as pre-1988 and then yearly from 1990/91. Voyages are listed by ship name, voyage number, year and cruise name. The dataset also includes soundings collected by the Royal Australian Navy. The data have been thinned so that only the deepest and shallowest soundings in each 2500 metre interval of each trackline are present. The data have been checked for bad soundings and navigation errors. The value tests for the dataset include a test for spatial accuracy and data completeness, including line and point errors a test of valid values against the data model a visual check to hard copy material. Soundings from the following cruises have been corrected using echo-sounding correction tables based on a speed of sound in water of 1500 M/S, AAMBER2, FISHOG, KROCK, MONGREL and SHAM. No tidal corrections have been applied. Data collected after 1990 has been positioned using GPS and prior to that using a variety of techniques including Doppler satellite navigation and dead reckoning. This GIS dataset includes soundings, bathymetric contours and bathymetric areas. The spatial extent of the data ranges from the coast of Kemp Land to the western end of the West Ice Shelf. The data have been formatted according to the SCAR Feature Catalogue (see Related URL). Some of the data are displayed in the map 'Prydz Bay', a 1:1000000 bathymetric map published in September 1997, map number 7 in the SCAR Map Catalogue (see Related URL). Does not conform to Australian Antarctic Spatial Model.
