Summary:Progress Code: completed Maintenance and Update Frequency: asNeeded Statement: Data sampling is being conducted as part of a larger IMOS monitoring program. The phytoplankton samples are returned to CSIRO O&A, Hobart and analysed at the Australian Antarctic Division. Four hundred mL of sample is settled in a 500 mL measuring cylinder for 24 hours. The top ~300mL is siphoned off once settled and the remainder is transferred into a 100ml measuring cylinder and left to settle for a minimum of 24 hours. Once settled the top 85 mL is siphoned off from these samples and the remainder is gently mixed and transferred into an amber glass sample jar. Samples are stored at 4 oC until analysis. This is gently agitated and a 6mL sample is taken and transferred into an Utermohl chamber. The whole sample is scanned at 100x magnification for species composition and consecutive fields of view counted at 320x until 400 cells of the dominant group or species were observed. The maximum used for identification is 640x magnification. These counts are then converted to cells / L and mL / L and the analysis data is exported to AODN: https://portal.aodn.org.au. Credit These data are from the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) - IMOS is a national collaborative research infrastructure, supported by the Australian Government. The phytoplankton samples are collected in-situ and preserved using a Remote Access Sampler, which remains at the site until the mooring is retrieved.
