Gives long recollection of going north to Tlingit country as a child in 1863 with his mother to see her father and tells what he remembers of tobacco. Also tells of recollection of growing of potatoes among Haida and Tlingit, and attempt to grow it at Fort Rupert by a Scotsman named Thomas Manrow. Also tells of grandfather going to Hawaii around 1830 and coming back with abalone shells and tobacco.
