Description
Summary:Archeologists from the Western Archeological and Conservation Center (WACC), National Park Service (NPS) conducted archeological surveys of portions of the Tucson Mountain District (TMD) of Saguaro National Park between April 25 and May 24, 1995 and from May 21 to July 23, 1996. Archeological projects have been conducted in the Tucson Mountain District of the Park since 1965. To date more than 7,800 acres of the District's 24,500 acres have been surveyed for archeological remains and 105 sites have been recorded. The 1995 surveyors covered 730 acres, recorded eight new sites and updated records for 16 previously recorded sites. The 1996 crew surveyed 1,550 acres, recorded four new sites and updated records for 15 previously recorded sites. Chapter 1 includes brief descriptions of the 1995 and 1996 surveys, the culture history and the environment. Chapter 2 is a summary of previous archeological research. Chapter 3 presents the results of the SAGU 1995 A and SAGU 1996 B surveys. Chapter 4 is a summary of sites recorded throughout TMD with tables listing data for all sites recorded since 1965. Chapter 5 presents site condition and significance assessments as well as management recommendations for all of the TMD sites. Appendix I is a compendium of site descriptions for the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park prepared for quick reference.
